What goes into the price
Windstorm certification pricing has three moving parts: a base price that depends on the construction type and whether the property is residential or commercial, a per-square-foot component for larger buildings, and add-ons — rush service and the completed-construction surcharge. Current pricing by project type
These are the rates our quote calculator uses today:
- Re-roofing, residential — from $500 plus $0.12/sq ft
- Re-roofing, commercial — from $800 plus $0.20/sq ft
- Small exterior addition (attached), residential — from $500 plus $0.12/sq ft; commercial from $800
- Small detached structure (garage, carport, shed) — residential from $800; commercial from $500
- Major remodeling, residential — from $1,000 plus $0.12/sq ft; commercial from $1,200 plus $0.20/sq ft
- New construction, residential — from $1,000 plus $0.12/sq ft; commercial from $1,200 plus $0.20/sq ft
The add-ons explained
Rush service is a flat $500 on any project type: 5 days from deposit to TDI submission with next-day inspection available, versus about 14 days standard. The completed-construction surcharge applies when the work is already finished (or was completed six or more months ago) and needs the retrospective WPI-8E evaluation — $250 for small projects, $400 for re-roofs, and up to $1,000 for new construction and major remodels, because testing and engineering analysis substitute for staged inspections.
Ways property owners overpay — and how not to
The most expensive certification is the retroactive one: skipping the engineer during construction and returning later for a WPI-8E can more than double the cost of the same project. The second is rebuilding non-compliant work: if a required inspection is missed and the stage gets covered up, corrections can mean tearing out finished work. Appointing the engineer before construction starts is the cheapest insurance you will ever buy on a coastal project.
